Once you leave the shop, the healing is in your hands. Keep your tattoo clean, protect it from friction, dirt, soaking and direct sun, and follow the instructions your tattooer gave you.Every tattoo, skin type and dressing is different. The specific advice from your tattooer always comes first.
Leave the dressing on for the length of time your tattooer recommended.Medical adhesive film, sometimes called second skin, and standard film or absorbent pads are handled differently. Do not use the same timing for every type of dressing.A small amount of plasma, ink or fluid underneath an adhesive film can be normal. If the seal breaks, the tattoo becomes exposed or the dressing causes strong irritation, contact the shop.
Always wash your hands before touching your fresh tattoo. When it is time to remove the dressing, gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Do not scrub it.Pat it dry carefully with a clean disposable paper towel. Do not rub it with a used towel, and make sure it is dry before applying another product.Keep the tattoo clean, but do not over-wash it.
If the tattoo feels dry or tight, apply a very thin layer of the aftercare product recommended by your tattooer. The tattoo should not dry out completely, but it should not remain wet, greasy or covered in a thick layer of cream either. Do not experiment with different creams, oils or skincare products while it is healing.
-Scratching or picking at flakes and scabs
-Long showers, baths, swimming pools, lakes and the sea
-Saunas and excessive sweating
-Direct sunlight and tanning beds
-Tight or linty clothing rubbing against the tattoo
-Dirt, pet hair and touching the tattoo with unwashed hands
-Jewellery, straps or equipment rubbing against the area
Let any flaking or scabbing come away naturally.
Some tenderness and mild redness immediately after the appointment can be normal. The tattoo may also release a small amount of plasma and ink, particularly underneath an adhesive dressing.Flaking and itching can happen later in the healing process. Healing time varies depending on the tattoo, placement, skin and aftercare. The tattoo should gradually settle rather than become more painful or irritated.
Seek medical advice promptly if redness, swelling, heat or pain becomes stronger or starts spreading. You should also get medical help if you notice pus, red streaks, fever or feel generally unwell. You can contact the shop if you are uncertain about the healing process, but do not wait for a reply if the symptoms are becoming worse.
Once the tattoo is completely healed, protect it from strong sunlight with a high-SPF sunscreen. This helps protect both your skin and the tattoo over time.
If you are unsure about anything, contact your tattooer or the shop. Send us a clear photo and tell us when the tattoo was done.
